Arnhem

Arnhem with it's 150.000 inhabitants, is one of the largest cities of the Netherlands and the capital of the province of Gelderland. Perhaps most of it's international fame was earned in WWII during the Battle of Arnhem, one of the battles fought during Operation Market Garden. A book on this subject was the inspiration for the classic movie A Bridge Too Far (1977).

Recently, Arnhem was chosen 'Best Event City' and 'Greenest City of Europe'. The city park Sonsbeekpark, with it's 67 acres of forest, ponds and streams, was chosen 'Best Public Space' in 2010. Arnhem is also well-known for it's host of fashion designers and clothing stores.

Some other places of interest are:

St Eusebius church: built between 1452-1560, it was almost completely destroyed in WWII. It re-opened to the public in 1964. You'll get a great view of the city from the top of the tower.

Open Air Museum: The Netherlands Open Air Museum uses authentic buildings, objects and true stories to bring the past to life. Join them on a journey through the last two hundred years. The museum, with its farmyards, farmhouses, cottages and businesses, farmer's café and shops, is a hive of activity.

Burgers' Zoo: One of the biggest zoos in the country. In the park you'll find the original zoo, a safari park, a tropical rainforest and much more.

Arnhem War Museum 40-45: In May 1994 the city of Arnhem saw the official opening of a private war museum. The Arnhem War Museum 40-45 portrays the history of the war years 1940 - 1945 up to and including the liberation, as they were experienced in Arnhem and immediate surroundings. You will find quite a unique collection of weapons, uniforms, documents and various objects giving an impression of daily life dure the occupation.

Airborne Museum 'Hartenstein': Listen to moving stories told by British, Polish and German war veterans and to the testimony of civilians who endured the agonies and still honour the Allied veterans. Authentic weapons, documents, films, photographs and other objects are on display in the museum - a now beautifully renovated building that the Allies used as their headquarters during the battle. And don't miss the Airborne Experience in the underground area, where history comes alive and the dramatic events are brought startlingly close.

John Frost Bridge: This bridge is named after Major-General John Dutton Frost (1912-1993), who commanded the British forces that reached and defended the bridge during the Battle of Arnhem in September, 1944.

Museum of Modern Art: 'Forms of Realism' is the base for the collection of the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem (Museum of Modern Art Arnhem), or MMKA. The collection consists of precursors from 1890-1925, forms of realism from 1925-1960, figurative art from 1950-1990, various arts from 1985-present and a collection of modern and contemporary applied arts and design from 1900-present.
